Cost classification rules
Use classification rules in MarginMeter to move costs between COGS, OpEx and excluded — for example a staging AWS account or an internal R&D OpenAI project.
By default, provider costs count as COGS. Classification rules let you correct that without editing data.
Examples
- An AWS account used only for staging → OpEx.
- An OpenAI project used for internal experiments → OpEx or Excluded.
- A category such as security tooling → OpEx.
How rules apply
Rules match on provider, connection, service, category or a dimension such as account or project. The first matching rule by priority wins. Changes are applied by rebuilding aggregates, so historical margins update consistently — and a preview shows how much cost a rule would move before you save it.
Classification rules are available on Starter and Pro. If you downgrade, existing rules keep applying so historical margins don't silently change; you just can't create new ones.
